Grammar and Style in american British English: The modern essay is of the Importance Rewards at Work and School a fairly short piece of work of between 500 and 3,000 words, written on a well-defined subject intended for reading in american culture a. single session. Shorter works are known as vignettes while longer ones are called extended essays or dissertations. A doctoral thesis can. reach100,000 words, after which the work becomes book size. Like all scripts, essays draw from the Essay in the Diseases, two principal styles of vs chinese writing, narrative and exposition. To summarise I n short, narrative is artistic writing and exposition is academic writing. This is not to of marketing kotler say that these two forms of american culture vs chinese culture writing never converge.

On the Essay on Overview of the of Intrinsic and School, contrary, the works of journalists, travel writers and biographers often draw. heavily upon the techniques of both, b ut exposition and narrative remain recognisably different styles, and essays, for the most part, are written in. one or the other. The narrative and expository essay each has a close relation. The descriptive essay is an vs chinese offshoot of the narrative essay, and the argumentative. essay, an offshoot of the expository. Four kinds of essay are thus discussed here, followed by a few tips on drafting the expository essay (analysing, defining or explaining) Narrative is storytelling, the chronological relation of events.

It is the one of the founders of modern, most natural way of writing because it is the most natural way of american culture vs chinese speaking ( first I. did this and then I did that ) which is why it is the most deceptively simple of styles. Consider, for example, how one person can relate an anecdote. about her children and have us in fits of Importance Rewards laughter while another does the same and bores us to distraction. Some people are skilled narrators while. What goes for speech, goes for writing.

To write narrative well is difficult; to american culture write it badly in psychology the belief that it has been written well is unfortunately all. too easy. Vs Chinese? A probable reason for this self-deception is the virtual universality of literacy. Few among us can paint a picture or play a musical instrument, so we easily recognise the skills of Culture, Customs and Etiquette Essay those who can. But everybody ‘writes’.

Little wonder, then, that far more people say they are going to write a book. one day than say they are going to master the violin, while they are as ill-equipped to do the one as do the other. Many useful learn-to-write books are. available, and one of their most frequent pieces of advice is worth repeating: If you suspect it’s rubbish, it is american culture vs chinese culture . Writing narrative writing to entertain people might be the englishman who was one of the founders, most difficult kind of prose to write, but we have all probably attempted it. American Culture Culture? The most. rudimentary examples are the time-honoured titles we tackled in primary school: 'A Rainy Day'; 'How I Spent my Summer Holidays'. More. sophisticated examples range from the short stories of such masters as Saki and O. Englishman Who Was The Founders Of Modern Phonetics? Henry to american culture modern novels, the consummate form of narrative. Narrative essays, in fact, usually appear in the form of short stories or biographical anecdotes, and definition the author, just like the novelist, needs to appeal. to the american, reader's emotions and draw him into a world of the Essay on Overview of the Importance at Work, author's creation.

How this is achieved, of course, is more easily said than done, yet there. are several devices that can be recognised in the works of successful authors. Narrative essays and short stories are often written in american vs chinese culture the first person ( I ). Russia's Culture, Customs Analysis Essay? This lends them authenticity and allows the reader more easily to american culture vs chinese culture identify. with the character experiencing the events. Essay On Overview Of Intrinsic And School? The drawback is culture culture that the Essay of the Importance of Intrinsic Rewards at Work, first person constrains the writer to one point of culture view, allowing nothing to occur.

in the script that the central character does not himself or herself directly experience. There can be no he thought and she thought , only I thought . While it is important in all essays to win the reader’s attention quickly, nowhere is this more important than in narrative. With an expository essay, as. we shall see, the reader is looking for information or explanation. Entertainment is a bonus. With the Essay Importance, narrative essay, on the other hand, entertainment.

is expected. This initial interest can be achieved by means of the narrative hook, whereby the first few sentences capture the reader’s attention. The. hook can be dramatic, funny, thought-provoking, mysterious or controversial, just as long as it motivates the reader to vs chinese culture turn the crucial first few pages.. Narrative almost always focuses on some form of conflict: a conflict between people, between a person and definition of marketing the elements or between one person’s. desires and conscience. Culture? A lack of conflict is one of the main reasons readers give up on Russia's Analysis, scripts and say that ‘nothing was happening’. Conflict also. helps to create tension and suspense, and culture the writer needs to psychology learn the skill of revealing information partially and american culture vs chinese culture slowly. The denouement (plot. resolution) finally resolves the conflict or tension and creates that sense of satisfaction that readers of narrative expect.

Writers of good narrative follow the much-proffered advice for all story writing: Don’t tell! Show! In other words, readers should be allowed to see. characters in action rather than have those actions described for them. My partner, John, had taken a new teaching post at St. Giles’, a tough. new comprehensive school, but after only a month it became obvious. that the job was wearing him down. He came home from work one. evening, looking dreadful and clearly very upset, and announced that.

I sighed as the front door slammed again with unnecessary force. Just. four weeks at St. Giles’ Comprehensive and John was turning into a man. I neither knew nor liked. He walked into the living room and sank into the. settee.

That facial muscle had begun to twitch again as he stared at nothing. at all. Then he looked at me, as if surprised to find himself at home. In the same way, characters’ moods and feelings should be revealed rather than described, an end achieved by using nouns and englishman who was one of of modern phonetics verbs more than. adjectives and american vs chinese culture adverbs. Adverbs, in particular, are often apologies for poor narrative Samantha stared worriedly out of the window. (Describing) Samantha stared out mr pirzada came of the culture vs chinese, window, gnawing her lower lip. (Revealing) Sometimes, the adverbs can simply be deleted Readers want to infer the moods and feelings of characters for themselves, not be led by the nose. T he writer should also minimise the uses of he said and she said . But where necessary, it is wiser to keep to said rather than employ the so-called. ‘elegant variation’ that is characteristic of the amateur: she exclaimed , he retorted . In contrast to expository essays, opinions need not be supported by evidence. Feelings more than reasoned arguments are what interest the reader.

Narrative enjoys considerable grammatical licence in order to represent the ways in which people speak and think. The fused sentence is never. advisable, but sentence fragments, the one-word ‘sentence’ and Essay on Overview of the Importance and School sentences that begin with conjunctions are all effective devices for emulating. thought, as if the character were actually thinking aloud How dare he talk to me like that! And in front of Katy, too. American Culture Vs Chinese Culture? I said. nothing. Just watched him strut off to the kitchen in his socks. Then. he cried out and swore as he stubbed his toe against the leg of on Transgenic Animals in the Diseases the.

Finally, short narratives (in distinction to longer works such as novels) often follow one or more of the american, ‘unity’ principles: unity of Culture, and Etiquette Essay person, place and. time. Unity of person keeps the culture, reader in one person’s mind; unity of genetic place keeps him in the same location, rather like a scene from a play or a film; and unity of time keeps him moving in real time; there are no jumps forward ( The following day, ) and certainly no flashbacks. Everything unfolds in. an unbroken duration. Culture Vs Chinese? Although by no means rules, these principles of unity often make for excellent narrative . 1. Descriptive essays as such are rarely encountered outside creative-writing courses.

Their nearest approximations elsewhere are passages or entire. chapters from larger works, such as novels, where the Essay on Transgenic in the of Neurodegenerative Diseases, plot is temporarily suspended in order to linger on something of interest. But the description. must be graphic, not encyclopaedic. An essay describing quantum theory or describing how a bill goes through Parliament would be an american vs chinese expository, not a descriptive, essay.

A descriptive essay creates a vivid and colourful picture of Essay on Overview of the of Intrinsic Rewards something, along with a central mood or impression, and the. writing is sensuous, appealing to culture as many of the five senses as possible; at appropriate times, the writer will describe not just sight and sound, but. also touch, taste and smell. The subject of description might be almost anything: a room, a valley, a person, a storm, an erotic experience. The important thing is that the reader. feels he is vicariously experiencing something rather than simply reading about it It was near midnight, and ever since dusk I had been tramping the mr pirzada came summary, naked.

My clothes were. sodden; my coat-tails flapped with a noise like pistol shots; my boots. squeaked as I went. Overhead, the October moon was in her last quarter, and might have been a slice of when came finger-nail for all the light she afforded. Two-thirds of the time the wrack blotted her out altogether; and I, with.

my stick clipped tight under my armpit, eyes puckered up, and head bent. aslant, had to keep my wits alive to american culture vs chinese culture distinguish the road from the on Transgenic in the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, black. heath to right and left. For three hours I had met neither man nor man’s. dwelling, and (for all I knew) was desperately lost. Indeed, at the cross- roads two miles back, there had been nothing for me but to choose the. way that kept the wind on my face, and it gnawed me like a dog. (Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, ‘The Two Householders’) 2. Expository and argumentative essays are the ones most commonly encountered in academia, and are much more formal compositions than those. described above. Exposition means ‘explaining’, ‘analysing’ or ‘defining’, and the subject of an expository essay is american culture vs chinese anything so exposed: the meaning.

of a poem, a political doctrine, a philosophical idea, the causes of a war, an economic development and so forth. The exposition, moreover, is. precise. A philosophy essay, for example, will need scrupulously to define its central concepts, a task that requires a fastidiousness of thought for. which the impressionistic language of narrative is wholly unsuited. In some cases (explained below), elements of narrative might be permissible, but. this shifts the essay closer to the journalistic article, a move of which some academics might disapprove. As we might remember from school, the expository essay comprises three sections: the introduction, the body and Language, the conclusion. The introduction typically consists of about ten per cent of the essay and normally includes a thesis statement: usually one or two sentences that. explain the purpose of the essay. The thesis statement is to the essay what the topic sentence is to the paragraph: a brief outline of what is to.

follow. Its length and position, however, will be determined by american vs chinese the nature of the material and by Russia's Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette Essay the reader’s requirements, although it should not. normally appear later than the second paragraph. In the most intellectually demanding of essays, the entire introduction might be a virtual thesis statement, forming, so to speak, the writer’s briefing. to her readers before taking them on culture, a journey. That journey is Essay Animals Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases likely to be difficult, so her readers will need a map.

They will need to know their. destination and what the main stopping places are to be along the way. Culture Vs Chinese? And while there might be a few relevant diversions en route , there will be no. radical change of direction from that plotted in Essay Animals Study the introduction (which is why the introduction is often the last part of the american culture vs chinese culture, essay to be written). In this. way, the introduction becomes an encapsulation of the entire essay, including the conclusion To examine the concept of justice in Plato’s Republic , we need first to. distinguish the several ways in which that concept can be understood. Having outlined the four principal meanings of the word, we shall. proceed to investigate which (or which combination) of them the.

Platonic Socrates most likely has in mind in his dialogues, first with. Glaucon and then Thrasymachus. We shall conclude that the. preponderant concept is distributive justice, with possible connotations. of remedial justice, and that, given Socrates’ paradoxical belief that ‘no.

one does wrong willingly’, retributive justice does not figure at Essay at Work and School, all. Assuming the reader to be familiar with Plato’s Republic , he now has a fairly good idea of american culture vs chinese culture what to expect from the essay. He knows from the opening. clause that the purpose is to examine Platonic justice, while the rest of the paragraph (and there might be two or three) brings the on Transgenic Animals Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, thesis more sharply. into focus for american culture vs chinese him. Englishman Who Was The Founders? An introduction such as this might also include an explanation of culture vs chinese culture any unfamiliar or stipulated terms to be used in the essay ( We. shall understand procedural justice to mean ), but it is arguably wiser to deal with them as they occur in the body of the essay where they are likely. to be better remembered. In expository essays of a less intellectually rigorous nature, the thesis statements will be correspondingly shorter The subject of definition by philip kotler inquiry is how AIDS is american vs chinese culture being combated in developing. The problem to be addressed is why, in spite of the government’s ban. on hand guns, there has been a dramatic rise in armed crime since the.

What do we mean by ‘freedom of the press’? This is the englishman one of the founders phonetics, question we. shall attempt to answer. The evidence will be considered both for and against american, the claim that. David Copperfield was Dickens’s clandestine autobiography. Jazz is arguably America’s greatest contribution to world culture. Here. we will examine its three main early influences: ragtime, gospel and the.

Note the specificity of the statements and that the ‘statements’ can actually be questions. A thesis statement that proposes to discuss ‘the problem. of AIDS’ or ‘the problem of armed crime’ could be considered rather too general. The most natural place for the thesis statement is at the beginning. As the opening sentence or sentences, the statement immediately informs the. reader of what the essay is to be about before he settles down to genetic read it. This is probably the wisest course if the essay is culture being written for an. exclusively academic readership (e.g. On Transgenic Animals Of Neurodegenerative? a college tutor). If, on the other hand, the essay is to appeal to the wider readership of, say, a magazine, the.

writer might wish to build up some interest before coming to the thesis statement. This technique, called funnelling, feeds the reader a little. anecdotal information that gradually tapers to the thesis statement, usually at the end of the american vs chinese, first paragraph. Suppose, for example, that the topic is to be the surprise result of the 1992 British general election. If the work is an of the Importance of Intrinsic at Work and School undergraduate politics essay, the writer would be wise to open with the thesis statement The topic of investigation is why, in the run up to the general election of. April 1992, the opinion polls so spectacularly failed to predict a Conservative. If, instead, the work is to american culture culture appear in a journal or magazine, the writer might choose to came to dine funnel it with an introduction such as this On the morning of 9 April, 1992, Neil Kinnock, Leader of the Labour. Party since 1983, was in buoyant mood. American Culture Vs Chinese? He had good reason to kotler be. Under. the Conservatives, Britain was going through its worst recession since.

the 1930s, and the devaluation crisis of ‘Black Wednesday’ was still. painfully fresh in people’s minds. He sensed victory, and the opinion polls. encouraged him. Labour, they said, was heading for a clear victory. Thirty-six hours later, notwithstanding 39 Tory losses and american 42 Labour. Gains, it was clear that John Major would be the man to walk back. through the psychology, door of Number Ten to lead his party in its fourth consecutive. term of office. Why, then, did the opinion polls so spectacularly fail? Here, the writer has included an element of narrative in american culture vs chinese her exposition in order to generate interest in readers who, unlike college tutors, are under no.

obligation to definition kotler read the script. Assuming all the research has been completed, the writer now has to organise her information into a coherent body of vs chinese paragraphs, each setting out. one or more points that develop the psychology, thesis statement. This can be done in a number of ways, but it is worth noting that readers tend to remember the. beginning and the end of the body more than the middle. The recommended technique, therefore, is to arrange the material into a hierarchy of. arguments from the most to culture vs chinese the least important and then to present them accordingly. To continue with our election example, this might be achieved.

In her notes, suppose, the writer has randomly listed six explanations of why the came, polls were so wide of the mark 1. So-called ‘floating voters’ are notoriously fickle and apt to change. their minds even in american culture culture the polling booth. campaign against the Labour Party in Essay of Intrinsic the last few days before the. 3. American Vs Chinese? Although John Major presented a softer image than Margaret. Thatcher, the on Overview of the of Intrinsic Rewards at Work and School, latter’s ‘uncaring’ legacy was such that many. Conservative supporters were afraid of being perceived as immoral. by revealing their party allegiance to the opinion pollsters.

4. Opinion pollsters need quick, unambiguous answers, and Conservative. supporters are traditionally more circumspect about their voting. intentions than their Labour counterparts. 5. Opinion pollsters are almost always racing against the clock, and among. their temptations is to avoid knocking the doors of houses with long. drives, the more likely dwellings of Conservative supporters. 6. The Labour Party seemed to be celebrating victory prematurely, and. many of their potential voters resented this ‘arrogance’. These six points will comprise the body of the essay and the writer now has to arrange them in order of importance. The first thing she spots is that only three of vs chinese these points specifically address the by philip kotler, 1992 election as opposed to culture culture elections in general, namely 2, 3. and 6. Who Was Of Modern Phonetics? These, then, are the most important topics and will somehow be arranged to appear at american, the beginning and the end of the body.

Of these, the writer might now decide that the press campaign (2) has the greatest explanatory value. For while the Tories’ uncaring image (3) and. Labour’s premature celebrations (6) were contributory factors, they were nothing like as decisive in thwarting the opinion polls as the final press. onslaught on Labour’s taxation policy led by The Sun . Point 2, then, will be the last to who was one of phonetics be made and will be given full paragraph status. American Culture Vs Chinese Culture? Next, she. decides that point 6 is more important than point 3, so 6 will come somewhere in the first paragraph and when 3 in the penultimate. So far, then, the arrangement of the six-point body is culture Of the remaining points, those most likely to who was the founders provide new and interesting information to the reader are probably the problems and practices of opinion. pollsters (4 and 5), while the prevarication of floating voters (1) is fairly common knowledge. In fact, our writer decides that 1 has the least explanatory. value and might as well be got quickly out of the way in american culture vs chinese a dependent clause as a point of small consequence Here, then, is the completed body with the introductory paragraph again On the morning of 9 April, 1992, Neil Kinnock, Leader of the genetic, Labour. Party since 1983, was in buoyant mood.

He had good reason to be. Under the Conservatives, Britain was going through its worst recession. since the 1930s and culture vs chinese the devaluation crisis of ‘Black Wednesday’ was. still painfully fresh in people’s minds. He sensed victory, and the opinion. polls encouraged him.

Labour, they said, was heading for a clear victory. Thirty-six hours later, notwithstanding 39 Tory losses and 42 Labour. Gains, it was clear that John Major would be the man to walk back. through the door of Number Ten to lead his party in its fourth consecutive. term of Culture, Customs Essay office. Why, then, did the opinion polls so spectacularly fail? Apart from the american, notoriously fickle behaviour of floating voters, who have. been known to prevaricate even with the kotler, pencil in their hands (1) , the. Labour machine was celebrating victory early. No one admires pessimism. in politics, but this flamboyant optimism - the almost indecent haste of.

moving the Kinnock furniture into Number Ten before the count had. properly begun - was perceived as rather un-British. This would almost. certainly have been enough to tip the american vs chinese culture, scales to the Tories for potentially. first-time Labour supporters (6) . A second reason is the considerable difficulty opinion polls encounter in. acquiring truly representative samples. Pollsters require neat unambiguous. answers, and Labour supporters are traditionally more forthcoming in this. respect than their Conservative counterparts (4) . To exacerbate the problem, they are almost always racing against the clock, and among their temptations. is to avoid knocking the doors of Essay Animals Study Diseases houses with long drives, the more likely. dwellings of Conservative supporters (5) . Odd though it might seem, another factor that contributed to american culture vs chinese culture the inaccurate.

predictions was embarrassment. For thirteen years, the image of Language, Customs and Etiquette Essay the. Conservative Party had inexorably been hardening. During Margaret. Thatcher’s premiership, it came to be seen, rightly or wrongly, as the party. of naked capitalism, a capitalism no longer tempered by the noblesse oblige. of gentleman Tories such as Edward Heath and Lord Carrington.

Both by. her rhetoric and her deeds, the Iron Lady seemed to have revived the. nineteenth-century belief that it is a necessary condition of progress that the. weak go to the wall. That John Major might have presented a softer image. could make no impact on the legacy of successive governments that were. clandestinely privatising the health service and binding the hands of trade.

unions with legal tape. Little wonder, then, that many of american culture culture its supporters were. reluctant to stand and mr pirzada summary be counted (3) . No one, however, was prepared for the unprecedented onslaught against american vs chinese culture, the. Labour Party led by The Sun . In just a few days, the paper managed to when came to dine turn. the tide to the Tories’ advantage by vs chinese raising the spectre of Labour’s taxation. policy (‘Will the last person to leave Britain please turns off the lights’). Notwithstanding that many of those frightened by the tax Bogey Man were the. low waged who stood materially to Culture, Customs Analysis benefit by Labour’s progressive income tax, the campaign succeeded, sealing Labour’s fate and causing some red faces. among the professional pollsters (2) . Different and better constructions of the culture vs chinese culture, body might be possible, but the principle remains: priority is best given to the beginning and the end. One of the when mr pirzada came to dine summary, weaknesses of conclusions sometimes is that they exist at vs chinese culture, all.

Having produced a reasonably good essay, the writer will often feel. constrained to write ‘a conclusion’ because this is what she has been told she should do, not realising that she might already have concluded it. well. What, for example, could fruitfully be added to our sample essay on the 1992 election? If we accept that the main purpose of a conclusion is. to confirm that the essay has fulfilled its thesis statement, then there is really nothing more to say.

At 500 words, on the other hand, our sample. essay is very short. In longer essays, with a correspondingly greater number of paragraphs in support of the thesis statement, the case for a formal. conclusion would be stronger. What, then, should a conclusion look like? Firstly, it should not merely be a summary of the essay; it must have. something original to say. Secondly, any questions set in on Transgenic Animals in the Diseases the introduction or essay title should be explicitly answered. The evidence will have been.

provided in the body and now is the time to formulate it into answers. These answers might be preceded by american culture a summary of the arguments that. appeared in the body, but only if those arguments have been sufficiently great in Importance and School number or sufficiently complex to warrant one. A summing up in our. short essay above would be unnecessary and appear amateurish. Vs Chinese Culture? Thirdly, the conclusion might be an Essay on Overview of the of Intrinsic and School inference drawn from the evidence of the body. Had it run to 2,000 words, say, the conclusion of american vs chinese culture our essay on the 1992 election might look like this Predicting human behaviour, then, is perhaps an art more than a science. However much the opinion pollsters agonise over their ‘blunder’ of 1992, it is inescapably the case that the factors influencing human conduct are. ones that are not easily amenable to scientific study. Lastly, the conclusion could draw the reader’s attention to the wider implications of the thesis statement, indicating that there are other important.

questions which can be raised. It will be beyond the scope of the present essay to by philip answer these questions, but they can be posed in american culture vs chinese order to. stimulate interest and further research. For example, should polling organisations consider how they might achieve more representative samples? Should the apparent power of the press be a cause for concern?

In order to Essay of the Rewards at Work and School investigate the relationship between working-class occupations. and voting behaviour, I first interviewed five people from social grades C2. and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, I interviewed five people from. the same grades who consistently voted Conservative. This way of writing is probably the one that comes most naturally to us all, and the way an uninstructed first-year might produce her first expository. essay. The passage is clear and grammatically correct, but the use of the first person I is inappropriate. To make matters worse, the writer is american vs chinese culture using the first person to who was the founders phonetics describe what she is doing rather than what she is thinking. The reader does not need. to be told who carried out the research since the author’s name will be on american culture, the document.

In the text, the writer should concern herself only with what. was done and what was discovered, not with the fact that it was she who did or discovered it. As we shall see, the first person is sometimes justified. in the genetic, argumentative essay to culture vs chinese express the who was one of, writer’s opinions, but mere exposition should be completely impersonal. One method by american culture vs chinese culture which this impersonality might be achieved (and the method sometimes recommended) is to use the more detached third person In order to investigate the relationship between working-class occupations. and voting behaviour, the author first interviewed five people from social. grades C2 and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, she interviewed five.

people from the same grades who consistently voted Conservative. But this merely adds affectation to the problem. The writer is still drawing attention to herself by explaining what she did, succeeding only one of phonetics, in. compounding the issue by the inauthentic and archaic practice of referring to herself as if she were someone else. A better technique is to avoid reference to herself altogether In order to investigate the american vs chinese, relationship between working-class occupations.

and voting behaviour, five people were interviewed from social grades C2. and D who consistently voted Labour. Next, five people from the on Overview Importance Rewards, same. grades were interviewed who consistently voted Conservative. The writer is vs chinese now well out of sight. That the englishman of modern, people in the survey were interviewed by american vs chinese her is understood but unsaid. The writer has maintained. authorial invisibility by using passive rather than active sentences.

But the drawback with a series of passive sentences is that they can make. for rather dull reading. One way around this problem is for the author to combine passive sentences with active ones in which he survey, or its. results, are the subject rather than she herself The results of the survey show that (active with a third-person subject) Another of the writer’s options is to use the first-person plural we as the subject of active clauses and sentences. It is of the Importance at Work and School straying a little into informal. territory, but it is culture established academic practice and has the advantage of mr pirzada to dine summary engaging the culture culture, reader by creating the impression that he is sitting side- by-side with the author As can be seen from the diagram (passive and Russia's Customs and Etiquette Analysis formal) As we can see from the diagram (active, engaging and formally acceptable) What conclusions can be drawn from culture culture this?

What conclusions can we draw from this? Two things need to be clarified We need to be clear about two things In expository essays, then, the writer is best advised to keep her head down by when came to dine summary using a combination of • active sentences in which the subject is the research method. (the survey, interview, questionnaire, experiment, etc.) (the author and her readers) In a sense, all academic essays are argumentative. The explanations and culture vs chinese definitions of expository essays can always be challenged, so that even.

they have a necessarily persuasive element. But argumentative or persuasive essays, per se, are much more explicitly prescriptive compositions. and are generally encountered at and above the undergraduate rung of the one of the founders of modern phonetics, academic ladder. Such essays (called papers if they are published or read to learned societies) might ostensibly appear as expository essays that purport merely. to explain something, but the american culture, original, radical or controversial nature of that explanation transforms them into argumentative essays.

Sir Isaiah. Berlin’s essay, ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’, 3 for example, sets out when mr pirzada summary ‘to examine’ two kinds of freedom, but it rapidly becomes clear that the definitions. are not ones with which everyone will agree. American Culture Culture? The essay thus becomes argumentative by virtue of the opposition it sets out to of marketing by philip attract. But argumentative does not mean ‘belligerent’ (although academics can be as churlish and vindictive as anyone else). There is culture a world of difference. between persuading someone of englishman one of of modern something and merely winning an american argument. The polemics of the party-political pamphlet, or the diatribes of.

‘Disgusted’ in the correspondence pages of the local newspaper, have no place in an argumentative essay. Such scripts must be just what they claim. to be: argumentative, not a series of unsubstantiated or one-sided claims. It takes at genetic psychology, least two to argue, so that the essay must either express at least. two points of view (one challenged and the other defended) or be ‘one-sided’ only in the sense of throwing down the culture, academic gauntlet. Essay Study? If the culture vs chinese, former. technique is chosen, the Language, and Etiquette Analysis Essay, author must create a genuine dialogue of ideas with her opponent, real or imaginary, expressing the opposing view fairly and. acknowledging any difficulties with her own. Equally importantly, there can be no and-that’s-an-end-of-the-matter tone in an argumentative essay. There is, and can be, no end to academic. debate, and an essay’s conclusion will necessarily be one with which readers can disagree.

If disagreement is not possible, then the argument has. been circular or tautologous. No academic argument is impenetrable, and every one is an invitation to further understanding. Culture Culture? The purpose of the. argumentative essay is to genetic show that the writer’s point of view is plausible and internally consistent, not that it is absolutely and incontestably true. The structure of the argumentative essay is the same as that of the expository essay discussed above. The main stylistic difference between expository and argumentative essays concerns person.

For while the first-person singular I is inappropriate in. the expository essay, it is occasionally permissible in the argumentative essay where the american culture, author is expressing a personal opinion. Russia's Language, Culture, Customs And Etiquette Essay? Even so, an over- abundance of such expressions as I think and it seems to me smack of egotism and can irritate the reader. It is therefore wise to be frugal with the. The first person can, of course, be used freely in the early stages as the writer gathers her thoughts, but most occurrences are easily banished in. the drafting stages. The simplest way is often to delete them. Thus In my opinion, Herzberg’s theory has two major weaknesses. Herzberg’s theory has two major weaknesses. But in what circumstances may the author legitimately raise her head?

Firstly, in culture culture cases where she herself has not set the essay, the title itself can. be a guide. Essay On Overview At Work? For example, 'How Plausible is Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation?' does not invite the use of the american culture vs chinese culture, first person in quite the same. way as 'How plausible do you consider Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation to be?' Secondly, as noted earlier, the first person should never. be used to Essay on Overview of the of Intrinsic Rewards and School describe what the author did, but only what she thinks. First-person statements are best kept to a minimum, reserved for the most important or thought-provoking ideas in american vs chinese culture the script or, occasionally, to. It seems to me, then, that the reasons for the fall in the birth rate have.

less to do with the Essay of the of Intrinsic at Work and School, advent of oral contraception than the conscious decision. by women to balance their careers with their family commitments. However, I am less sure of Jones’s (2001) claim that such a fall could have resulted. But even here, the first person can be avoided if the writer feels it is in danger of overuse. Thus the opening of the first sentence is easily changed. Arguably, then, the reasons for the fall in the birth rate while the opening of the second sentence can be changed to Less convincing, however, is Jones’s (2001) claim that Few writers will produce a satisfactory essay in culture culture one sitting. Most will find themselves with a lengthy first draft in considerable need of pruning and. refining before it meets the requirements of quality and size a task that can involve more work than was spent on of marketing by philip kotler, the research. But while sweat.

is necessary, tears are not. If the writer is american culture faced with the by philip kotler, distressing prospect of having to dispose of substantial, well-written passages on which. considerable effort has been spent, then those passages are either irrelevant to the thesis statement or the consequences of its overdevelopment. Let us deal with irrelevance first. A dangerous temptation for american the unwary is to on Transgenic Animals in the Study of Neurodegenerative focus on a key word or phrase in the essay title and then to write down all that is known about it, which.

more often than not involves needless definition. The writer, that is, will unnecessarily define or explain a concept when what is american required is the. application of that concept to explain something else. Take, for example, the essay title, 'Assess the value of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs with. reference to a business organisation'. Some students will immediately plunge in with something like this Maslow’s Hierarchy comprises five levels of need from low to high which. people seek to satisfy in ascending order: (1) physiological needs (such as. food, water and shelter); (2) safety needs (security and freedom from. danger); (3) social needs (affection and acceptance in groups); (4) esteem.

needs (being valued and respected by others); and (5) self-fulfilling needs. True but irrelevant. The writer has wasted time (and probably marks) defining Maslow’s Hierarchy instead of one of the founders of modern getting on with the business of. assessing its value The investigation into Anyfirm revealed how it is possible to american culture vs chinese culture descend. Maslow’s Hierarchy as well as ascend it. It became evident from the. interviews with the staff that, following the announcement of possible. redundancies, there was now far less concern with the satisfaction of the. higher needs and a corresponding increase in who was the founders concern with the lower.

With their jobs under threat, the lofty goal of self-fulfilment was sacrificed. for the culture culture, humbler and more urgent goal of job security. That the writer understands Maslow’s theory is apparent from its application. Overdevelopment, on and Etiquette, the other hand, is the result of poor planning. Academics writing papers for publication usually have some discretion in. respect of the length of their work. The hapless student does not.

A victim of her own enthusiasm, she can find herself with a script so far in. excess of what is admissible that to prune it without mutilation becomes impossible. What needs to be remembered is culture that writing an Essay Animals Study essay of two or three thousand words is culture vs chinese like furnishing a small living room; we can acquire some. beautiful items but, without the space, they merely transform the room into genetic an obstacle course. All we need is american culture vs chinese culture a centrepiece (the thesis statement) and a few well-chosen, coordinated items (the supporting arguments and conclusion). As the body of the essay is being constructed, therefore, the.

writer should get a feel for the size of her creation and realise, sooner rather than later, whether it is going to Russia's Culture, Customs and Etiquette Essay fit into the available space. This is vs chinese culture not. to say that interesting digressions should be ignored. Definition Kotler? They can be noted for future development, but it must be realised that they are unlikely to. find a place in the current essay. These errors aside, the purpose of the drafting stages will be to refine the american vs chinese culture, work in genetic psychology order to achieve optimum clarity and to rid it of dross.

Advice on. how to achieve these ends can be found in the sections on expletive sentences and culture clichés, pleonasms and verbosity. The remainder of this page. consists of a few reminders. It is a well-known fact that It has often been said that

There can be little doubt that All these verbose phrases are easily replaced with adverbs such as doubtless , evidently , generally , naturally and so forth. We can also shorten expressions and improve the quality of English at the same time When he had written his business plan, he arranged an interview with. We can also weed out the tautologies. American Culture? Each of the following, for example, should have one word deleted Finally, we should also guard against our own naïvety. All writers want to impress their readers, but using verbosity to disguise a commonplace is. not the way to do it The investigation method used to obtain the information necessary to.

CHAPTER 4. OSSICULAR DISCONTINUITY. As discussed in Chapter 3, the middle ear serves to transmit sound energy from the american culture, ear canal to the cochlea. In order to facilitate the efficient transmission of this energy, the and Etiquette Analysis Essay, eardrum and ossicles act as an impedance-matching transformer, partially matching the american culture, high impedance of the cochlear fluids to Language, Culture, Customs the low impedance of air in the ear canal. Any process that reduces the efficiency of this sound-conducting mechanism results in conductive hearing loss . There are many causes of conductive hearing loss (Harris and Cueva, 1992); however, only hearing loss caused by vs chinese culture, discontinuity of the ossicular chain will be discussed in this work. The next section discusses the two most common types of Essay, ossicular discontinuities. Surgical techniques used to repair the ossicular chain are discussed in Section 4.3. In Section 4.4, some of the mechanical issues related to the success of surgery are discussed. 4.2 COMMON DEFECTS. The most common ossicular defect is loss of the incudal long process; the second most common defect is combined loss of the incudal long process and the stapes superstructure (e.g., Austin, 1971; Sade and Luntz, 1991). These situations are illustrated in Figure 4.1.

Austin (1971) has reported that loss of the incudal long process. Figure 4.1 Two types of ossicular discontinuities. a) Missing incudal long process. b) Missing long process and american culture culture stapes superstructure. For clarity, the eardrum and other middle-ear structures have not been shown. From Donaldson et al . Definition By Philip Kotler. (1992, p.250). alone represents 59% of all ossicular defects; the combined loss of the incudal long process and the stapes superstructure accounts for another 23%. Erosion and the ultimate loss of these bones is often caused by chronic middle-ear disease such as otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear). Discontinuities of the ossicular chain result in conductive hearing loss since vibrations of the eardrum can no longer be transmitted to the cochlea; moreover, the eardrum shields the cochlea from direct stimulation by sound.

The extent of hearing loss in humans is american measured in terms of the definition of marketing, air-bone gap . American Culture. By definition, this is the number of decibels (dB) by which the Animals in the Study of Neurodegenerative, air-conduction threshold exceeds the bone-conduction threshold (Katz, 1985; p. 1060). The air-conduction threshold is measured by vs chinese, applying an Essay of the of Intrinsic Rewards and School air-conducted stimulus to the ear canal; it is affected by culture, both the conductive and of the Importance Rewards at Work the sensorineural components of the vs chinese culture, auditory system. Russia's Customs Essay. The bone-conduction threshold is measured by applying a mechanical stimulus to american culture vs chinese culture the skull; it is affected by the sensorineural components of the auditory system. Of Marketing By Philip Kotler. It is not possible to tell from the air-conduction threshold alone whether hearing loss is conductive or sensorineural; however, the difference between the american culture culture, two thresholds, the air-bone gap, can be used as an indicator of conductive hearing loss. A large air-bone gap, say above 20 dB, indicates conductive hearing loss (Glasscock and Shambaugh, 1990). Vartiainen and Nuutinen (1992) measured hearing loss in 277 patients with chronic otitis media. Pure-tone audiograms (graphs of hearing threshold in dB versus frequency) were measured at 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz. Essay On Overview Of The Of Intrinsic Rewards. The mean air-bone gap was determined from the audiograms by averaging the air-bone gaps at the three frequencies. American Culture Vs Chinese Culture. They found that loss of the incudal long process resulted in a mean air-bone gap of 32 dB; loss of both the incudal long process and the stapes superstructure resulted in an air-bone gap of 38 dB.

In laboratory animals, hearing sensitivity can be determined by Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette Analysis, measuring the pressure required to maintain a constant cochlear microphonic (CM) over a range of frequencies. The CM is a stimulus-related electric potential generated by sensory receptors in the cochlea (Durrant and Lovrinic, 1984, pp. 152-156). It can be measured by placing an electrode on the round-window membrane. Vs Chinese Culture. Presumably, the Essay of the Importance of Intrinsic Rewards and School, larger the pressure required to culture maintain a constant CM, the lower is the hearing sensitivity. Wever et al. (1948) determined the hearing sensitivity up to 10 kHz in cats before and after interruption of the genetic psychology, incudostapedial joint. They found that after such an encroachment, larger sound pressure was required to maintain the same CM as before; in american culture fact, the sound pressure required was 60 dB larger than in the normal ear, indicating a hearing loss of 60 dB relative to definition of marketing the normal ear. 4.3 SURGICAL REPAIR. Methods of repair. The goals of surgery are to eliminate disease, prevent recurrent inflammation, and/or improve auditory function (Smyth, 1988). Only techniques for improving auditory function will be discussed here.

These techniques have been described by a number of authors (e.g., Austin, 1971; Fisch, 1980; Smith and McElveen, 1988; Lambert and McElveen, 1993 ). In the case where only the culture vs chinese culture, long process of the incus is Essay of the Importance Rewards missing, sound transmission is re-established by fitting a prosthesis between the manubrium and the head of the stapes; often a homograft or autograft incus or malleus head is used to make the prosthesis (Emmett, 1989). (A homograft is a tissue transplanted between genetically nonidentical individuals of the same species. Culture Vs Chinese Culture. An autograft is a tissue grafted into a new position in the body of the same individual. An autograft malleus head would be obtained by surgically removing it from its attachments to genetic psychology the ligaments and by cutting it from the manubrium.) Essentially, the graft is vs chinese culture shaped to form a slim strut, a hole is drilled into the medial end of the strut to accept the head of the Russia's Language, Culture, Essay, stapes, and a groove is carved into american vs chinese the lateral end to articulate with the manubrium. Glue is sometimes used to secure the points of contact of the manubrium and stapes with the graft (Fisch, 1980). This surgical reconstruction is called a malleus-stapes assembly (MSA) and is shown in Figure 4.2a. When both the incudal long process and the stapes superstructure are missing, a prosthesis is fitted between the manubrium and the footplate. This reconstruction is called the malleus-footplate assembly (MFA) and is shown in Figure 4.2b. In both the MSA and the MFA, the prosthesis is sometimes made longer than required so it exerts tension on the eardrum and genetic psychology the annular ligament of the footplate. This tension stabilizes the strut. Many variations of the basic MFA and MSA exist (e.g., Fisch, 1980; Wehrs, 1982; Frootko, 1987; Mills, 1991).

Some of these variations have come about because of differences in the geometry of the ossicles among patients. For example, in some patients the manubrium is directly lateral to culture the stapes as shown in Figure 4.3a, but in (a)(b) Figure 4.3 Ossicular geometry. a) Manubrium directly lateral to stapes. b) Manubrium lateral and anterior to stapes. c) Horizontal MSA used in situation (b). Parts (a) and (b) are from Russia's Language, Culture, and Etiquette, Frootko (1987, p.249) and part (c) is from Mills (1991, p.477). others it is located anterior to the stapes as shown in Figure 4.3b. In the latter case, placing a strut between the american culture, manubrium and the stapes in the manner shown in Figure 4.2a could result in considerable tilting of the stapedial footplate, a situation that is thought to be undesirable since volume displacements of the Essay of the Importance at Work, cochlear fluids would be reduced (Vlaming and Feenstra, 1986b). Culture Culture. To prevent this, the prosthesis may be positioned horizontally as shown in Figure 4.3c. Interest in the use of synthetic materials for middle-ear surgery has also resulted in a great deal of variation in prosthetic design since these materials, unlike autograft bone, are available to the surgeon before entering the operating room; thus, much time can be spent on shaping them. Synthetic materials are also more readily available than ossicular bone, and their sterility and bonding properties make them suitable for use as graft material.

A variety of graft materials have emerged in the past few years. Among them, Plastipore, an inert high-density polyethylene sponge, has gained some popularity (Emmett, 1989). Two types of prostheses have been designed using Plastipore: the PORP (partial ossicular replacement prosthesis) and the TORP (total ossicular replacement prosthesis). Both prostheses are shown in Figure 4.4. The PORP is similar to the MSA except that sometimes its platform makes contact with the eardrum, while the TORP is similar to the MFA. The porous nature of englishman, Plastipore allows tissue ingrowth, making the TORP and the PORP mechanically stable with age (Makek et al ., 1988). American Culture Vs Chinese. Recently, a modified version of the when, TORP, called the Fisch II Spandrel, has been developed (Williams and Lesser, 1992). It is shown in vs chinese Figure 4.4c. Figure 4.4 Synthetic ossicular prostheses. a) PORP (Partial Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis). Russia's Language, And Etiquette Analysis Essay. b) TORP (Total Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis). c) Fisch II Spandrel. Parts (a) and (b) are from Frootko (1987, p.257) and part (c) is from Williams and Lesser (1992, p.263). Other materials used in middle-ear surgery include Bioglass, a chemically active glass (Merwin, 1986); Ceravital, a glass-ceramic material (Mangham and Lindeman, 1990); and hydroxyapatite, the main constituent of the mineral matrix of bone (Grote, 1986; Wehrs, 1989; Goldenberg, 1992).

Bioglass and Ceravital are bioactive, meaning that they are able to form chemical bonds with surrounding tissues. Hydroxyapatite comes in both bioactive and porous forms. These materials have been used to american culture vs chinese culture produce a variety of prostheses; however, the basic MFA and MSA designed from ossicular bone remain popular (Emmett, 1989) and will be the only prostheses to be modelled in this work. The success of surgery in humans is assessed in Customs and Etiquette Analysis terms of the reduction of conductive hearing loss, which is often measured by the degree of closure of the american vs chinese, air-bone gap. However, there does not appear to be any consistent method of quantifying success. For example, Smyth (1987) has classified closure of the mean air-bone gap to within 11 dB as success; on the other hand, Goldenberg (1992) has defined success as closure to within 25 dB for the PORP, using other definitions for other prostheses. Moreover, patients and doctors may not necessarily agree as to what is successful (Smyth, 1987). In any case, some closure of the air-bone gap does result when the MSA and MFA are used. For instance, Vartiainen and Nuutinen (1992) reported closure of the air-bone gap to within 20 dB in 58% of patients when the MSA was used.

The situation was worse for the MFA: only 30% of the of marketing by philip, cases resulted in american culture closure to within 20 dB. Results obtained by other authors are shown in Table 4.1. The performance of the MFA has been found to be poorer than that of the MSA in all cases. Table 4.1 Post-operative hearing results for humans with two middle-ear conditions: 1) Absent incudal long process and 2) absent long process and absent stapes superstructure. Shelton and Sheehy used PORP's and Essay in the Study of Neurodegenerative TORP's; MSA's and vs chinese culture MFA's made from ossicular bone were used in the other studies. N indicates the on Overview of the Importance, number of patients with the particular condition.

The percentage of patients with an air-bone gap of less than 20 dB is american culture also indicated. The effectiveness of prostheses has also been determined in cats. Tonndorf and Pastaci (1986) measured hearing sensitivity over a frequency range of 10 Hz to 15 kHz in anesthetized cats with normal middle ears. They then broke the incudostapedial joint and removed the crura. The ear was then repaired using an MFA, and the post-operative hearing sensitivity was measured.

They reported a 20-dB loss in hearing sensitivity compared to the normal ear; this is an improvement over the 60-dB loss reported by Wever et al . (1948) in cats after interruption of the incudostapedial joint. Benitez et al. (1974) determined audiometric thresholds at 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz in Animals in the Study three normal cats. They then disrupted the incudostapedial joint, fixed the ossicular chain using an MSA, and measured audiometric thresholds 31 to 33 months after surgery. They reported average hearing losses of 5, 11 and 26 dB in the three animals post-operatively. American Vs Chinese Culture. Once again this is an improvement over the 60-dB loss reported by Wever et al . after interruption of the ossicular chain. 4.4 MECHANICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE MFA AND MSA. Relatively little work has been done to assess the mechanics of the surgically corrected middle ear or the importance of mechanical variables. Section 4.4.2 discusses the experimental work that has been done in to dine this area, and Section 4.4.3 discusses the theoretical work that has been done. 4.4.2 Experimental Work. Several mechanical variables may be considered to be of american vs chinese, interest in the application of the MSA and MFA: the position of the prosthesis, the Russia's Language, Customs Analysis, tension exerted on the surrounding structures, and the types of connections formed between the prosthesis and the surrounding tissues. Vlaming and Feenstra (1986b) studied some of these issues in human cadaver middle ears using a laser Doppler interferometer.

These authors measured the displacements of a few points on the stapedial footplate in culture vs chinese the normal middle ear. They then disrupted the ossicular chain so that in the founders of modern some cases the crura were left intact, whereas in other cases the crura were destroyed. American Culture Vs Chinese. They surgically repaired the former discontinuity using an MSA; the latter discontinuity was repaired using a TORP. The displacements of the footplate were then measured after surgery. They suggested that hearing sensitivity is related to the volume displacement of cochlear fluids so that post-operative volume displacements should be comparable to of marketing kotler pre-operative levels for successful results. For the TORP at low frequencies, Vlaming and Feenstra found that the volume displacements of the cochlear fluids measured post-operatively were comparable to levels measured in the normal ear. On the other hand, volume displacements were lower than normal when the american vs chinese, MSA was used, suggesting that the TORP should give better hearing results than the psychology, MSA. However, clinical results (see previous section) suggest that the MSA works better than the MFA. Since the MFA is culture vs chinese similar to the TORP if the platform of the latter does not contact the eardrum, then, based on clinical results, it would be expected that the MSA also works better than the TORP.

Vlaming and Feenstra did not report whether the TORP contacted the eardrum or not in all of their preparations, but from their discussion it is likely that it contacted the drum in some cases; nevertheless, in all cases, they found the TORP to work better than the MSA. The discrepancy between the findings of Vlaming and Feenstra and those of clinicians may exist for several reasons. Essay Of The Rewards And School. First, Vlaming and Feenstra used ears that were disease-free; however, when surgery is culture vs chinese performed in living patients, the middle-ear is englishman one of of modern phonetics usually not free of culture vs chinese culture, disease. The extent of middle-ear disease necessitating the use of the TORP or the MFA is probably more advanced than that requiring the Essay on Overview of the of Intrinsic Rewards at Work, MSA or PORP. American Culture Vs Chinese Culture. Diseases such as otitis media can affect the mechanical properties of the middle-ear structures (e.g., von Unge et al ., 1992) and would thus account for differences between the results determined by Vlaming and Feenstra and those by clinicians. Second, it is possible that Eustachian tube function may be impaired in living subjects, thus affecting post-operative hearing results (Tos, 1979; Kumazawa et al ., 1993). Eustachian tube dysfunction results in pressures in the middle-ear cavities that are lower than normal (Tos, 1979); such changes could dampen eardrum vibrations (Vlaming, 1987), cause retraction of the eardrum (Tos, 1979), and result in an increase in the incremental stiffness of the middle-ear structures, all of which affect the mechanics of the middle ear.

Third, clinical studies are influenced by hearing loss due to sensorineural damage. The incidence of such damage is small (Tos et al ., 1984; Urquhart et al ., 1992) but could account for some of the discrepancies found between results obtained from psychology, cadavers and those from living subjects. Vlaming and american culture Feenstra also studied how the position of a prosthesis affects the displacements of the footplate. They found that the position of the MSA along the manubrium was important. They suggested that the optimal orientation for mr pirzada came to dine summary, the MSA is such that it lies along an imaginary line passing through the head of the stapes and the centre of the footplate. In most cases this means that the MSA should contact the manubrium near the umbo. With respect to the MFA, Vlaming and Feenstra did not report the effects of positioning it along the manubrium. However, the position of the vs chinese culture, MFA on the footplate was varied, and it was found not to by philip significantly affect the displacements of the footplate. For both prostheses, they found that tension exerted on american vs chinese culture, surrounding structures was quite important: increased tension resulted in smaller displacements of the footplate. Apparently, tension causes the who was one of phonetics, annular ligament of the footplate to stretch, resulting in an increase in american vs chinese culture its incremental stiffness.

Other authors have studied the effects of the mechanical variables just described in human cadaver middle ears by determining the amount of sound transmission that occurs pre-operatively and post-operatively. Andersen et al. (1962) applied sound to the oval window and measured the resulting pressure in the ear canal; presumably, the higher the psychology, degree of culture vs chinese culture, sound transmission, the better is the hearing sensitivity. In one of their experiments, the incus was removed and the degree of sound transmission was determined. The degree of transmission was then measured after placing a prosthesis between the on Transgenic Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, drum and the footplate. They suggested that there is an american vs chinese optimal position for a prosthesis that can result in genetic psychology nearly normal sound transmission, whereas other positions may give poorer results. No detailed information was given as to how it should be placed. Elbrond et al . (1965) also measured sound transmission in the surgically corrected ear, using the MSA in their experiments. They applied sound to the ear canal and measured pressure variations in the vicinity of the round window caused by vibrations of its membrane.

Like Vlaming and Feenstra, their results also indicate that tension in the MSA is important: increased tension results in vs chinese lower transmission, especially at low frequencies. Gundersen (1972) studied sound transmission in the reconstructed human middle ear, using a special prosthesis designed to englishman replace the incus. No details were given except that sound transmission was reduced on the average by culture, 4 to 5 dB than in the normal ear. Very few studies have been done in cats. Tonndorf and Pastaci (1986) found that the position of a prosthesis along the manubrium is relatively unimportant for the MFA as long as the of the, connection between the manubrium and the prosthesis is inflexible'. No results were given for a flexible connection. Benitez et al . (1974) attempted to correlate post-operative changes in hearing sensitivity in cats with histopathological findings. Their results indicate that the connections between the prosthesis and vs chinese culture surrounding tissues are stabilized by the proliferation of Essay in the Study, fibres.

Hearing results were found to be the best in one cat in culture vs chinese culture which the connections between the prosthesis and bones were deemed to be excellent'. This cat had a post-operative hearing loss of only Culture, Customs and Etiquette, 5 dB, compared with 11 dB and 26 dB in culture culture the other cats. 4.4.3 Theoretical Work. The only finite-element models of the reconstructed middle-ear are those of Lesser et al. (1991) and Williams and Lesser (1992). Lesser et al . have developed a two-dimensional model of the MSA for the human middle ear using the plane-strain assumption. Summary. Results of their model for various placements of the prosthesis along the manubrium indicate that the culture vs chinese culture, stress levels at Russia's Language, Customs Analysis the prosthesis-stapes interface increase as the prosthesis is moved down the manubrium. The results of american culture, their model are questionable as the englishman one of the founders of modern, plane-strain assumption may not be appropriate in this case: the culture vs chinese, eardrum is a three-dimensional structure which does not possess the type of symmetry required to permit the use of this assumption. Williams and Lesser (1992) have developed a three-dimensional model for the Fisch II Spandrel prosthesis in Russia's Language, Customs Analysis Essay the human middle ear. One objection to their model is that the footplate has been represented by a single point, implying that it moves in a piston-like manner. It is american culture culture possible for the footplate to tilt in the surgically corrected middle ear depending on the placement of the prosthesis, and tilting of the footplate may affect volume displacements of the cochlear fluids and hence hearing sensitivity (Vlaming and Feenstra, 1986b).

Other techniques have also been used to study the mechanics of the middle ear after surgery. For example, Wada et al. (1990) have used analytical techniques to model the mechanics of an Russia's Language, and Etiquette Essay artificial auditory ossicle. Their model assumes a flat, circular eardrum; presumably, this was done to make the analyses manageable. Culture Culture. However, the results of Funnell and Laszlo (1978) indicate that the three-dimensional shape of the eardrum is very important to its function. Peake et al . (1992) developed a lumped-parameter model of Russia's Language, Customs and Etiquette Analysis, type IV tympanoplasty, a surgical technique used to american culture shield the round window from acoustic stimulation when the eardrum, malleus and incus are missing; however, this technique is not in any way similar to the MSA or MFA.

Train Up a Child: What Does Proverbs 22:6Mean? The proverb reads: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and [or even] when he is american vs chinese old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). At first glance this sounds like a wonderful promise to parentsexactly what every God-fearing parent would love to summary, have as a promise from the Creator of marriage and family. Naturally, Christian parents possess an unquenchable hope that their children will remain with the culture, faith in Language, Culture, Essay which they are reared. Or, if their child departs for a while, the parents cling to the belief that the child will return.

But is Proverbs 22:6 a guarantee from God to parents that their children will stay in the Church? Unfortunately, it isn’t. But don’t many modern commentators, counselors and public speakers explain this verse as a guarantee? Yes, they do. But, regrettably, this is a misunderstanding.

Promises of God include numerous benefits for obeying His way of american culture life. But they do not include a guarantee to parents that children reared faithfully will keep the faith as adults. Some modern writers suggest that the phrase “in the way that he should go” includes the understanding of learning styles. Some children learn better visually, when they are shown illustrations of the lesson. Essay Of The At Work. Others learn better in an auditory manner, picking up the lesson by american culture vs chinese, hearing alone. Visualizations would be distracting to these children. And some children learn with the help of motion or kinesthetically. That is, incorporating some movement into the lesson helps affix it to their understanding. If these children are forced to sit still, only seeing illustrations or hearing a lesson, they may fail to grasp the point at all! Such an Russia's Language, and Etiquette Analysis Essay explanation of this verse seems to add weight to american culture vs chinese, the interpretation that the promises of God include a virtual guarantee to godly parents that “my child will stay with the one of the founders, faith all of his or her life!” Of course, understanding a child’s preferred way of american culture vs chinese learning can be helpful in order to better teach him or her, but this doesn’t really answer the question as to whether this verse is a guarantee that children will retain the spiritual values they are taught when they mature. In order to understand what Proverbs 22:6 is saying, we need to consider free moral agency, the background or culture of the day in which the proverb was written, as well as the meaning of the Essay Animals Study, words used for “train up” and “a child.” What seems to culture vs chinese culture, be right isn’t always the case (see.

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Proverbs 14:12). Fundamental to Christian understanding is the Language, and Etiquette Analysis, knowledge that God has given every person the culture culture, freedom to on Overview Rewards at Work, choose whether he will submit himself to God’s way of life. “Submit” is the correct word, for this choice includes recognizing God as one’s sovereign and looking to american, Him as the authority to definition of marketing kotler, define right from culture wrong. This was symbolized by the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. It is another way of saying conversion or the Christian way of lifeliving one’s life in accordance with God’s laws, which define righteousness. The opposite choice was also symbolized in the Garden by Adam and Eve’s decision to disobey God’s warning and their eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As a result, God forced them out of Eden. Their choice brought a curse on definition of marketing by philip kotler themselves and their descendants. Their choice was the opposite of allowing God to be their sovereign. It is the way of culture deciding for Animals of Neurodegenerative Diseases oneself what is right and wrong, what is righteousness and sin.

That choice is the natural inclination of every descendant of Adam and Eve! It symbolizes the choice being made by most people on earth today. Doesn’t God want His children to stay with His way of life? Yes, of course He does! But He does not want people to be in His family against their will. That would be the consequence of taking away the freedom to choose. Such people would be like robots instead of individuals with free will. God wants children who choose to become members of His family, who choose to obey His household rules (His laws) out of love for Him. If the promises of God included an ironclad guarantee that children reared rightly by american culture, godly parents will absolutely remain in the faith as adults, this would strip those children of of marketing kotler their freedom to choose. Free will is given by God to every human being. American Culture Culture. The way many people understand and speak of this proverb, therefore, contradicts one of the fundamental truths of the plan of God: free will or freedom of choice.

It is a doctrinal error. One simply cannot twist the verse to mean if one rears children properly, then God guarantees they will choose the right path. Guaranteeing someone will make a choice cannot be done without God taking the freedom to choose out on Transgenic in the Study Diseases, of the hands of every child reared by believing parents. Culturally, the Western world today does not have different classes of people; all are equal. That was not so in the time that this verse was written. One obvious status in ancient Israel was royalty, including princes, who received special treatment. There were also other classes. Young men (not young women) from the vs chinese culture, aristocracy would begin their specialized training in their late adolescence. This is when they would learn of Essay in the Study Diseases future responsibilities they would have. Most young men were not of any special class, and they simply learned the trade of their father.

In light of this cultural setting, note the explanation of american culture vs chinese culture Proverbs 22:6 by The Soncino Books of the Bible, edited by A. Cohen: “Train up . From the verb is derived the Hebrew word for ‘education’ ( chinmuch ). in the way he should go. lit. ‘according to his way.’ The intention is on Overview of Intrinsic Rewards at Work not ‘the way of uprightness and good living,’ but ‘for the way in which he is to spend his life.’ Whatever occupation he is later to follow it is american culture culture necessary to prepare him for it in his early years, because then are habits formed which influence his conduct in who was one of manhood” (p. 146). Other commentaries add to this understanding of Proverbs 22:6. Consider Dr. Constable ’ s Notes on Proverbs (2006 edition): “Train (Heb. hanak ) means to culture vs chinese, dedicate (cf. “Then the Essay Importance of Intrinsic Rewards, officers shall speak to the people, saying: ‘What man is there who has built a new house and american culture has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and Essay on Overview Importance of Intrinsic at Work and School another man dedicate it. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Deut.

20:5; And Solomon offered a sacrifice of culture vs chinese culture peace offerings, which he offered to the Lord, twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Culture, and Etiquette Essay, Thomas Nelson 1 Kings 8:63; King Solomon offered a sacrifice of vs chinese twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and psychology twenty thousand sheep. Culture Vs Chinese. So the mr pirzada came, king and all the people dedicated the house of God.

New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by american culture culture, Thomas Nelson 2 Chron. 7:5; And King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to gather together the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and psychology all the officials of the vs chinese culture, provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Dan. 3:2). It has the definition, idea of narrowing and in this verse implies channeling the child’s conduct into vs chinese culture the way of wisdom.

That guidance might include dedicating him or her to God and preparing the child for future responsibilities and adulthood. “‘In the way he should go’ is literally ‘according to his way.’ It may mean according to definition of marketing kotler, his own personality, temperament, responses, or stage in life. On the other hand it could mean the way in which he ought to go. The Hebrew grammar permits either interpretation. However the american culture culture, context favors the who was the founders, latter view. ‘Way’ in Proverbs usually means the path a person takes through life, not one’s personality, disposition, or stage in life. Consequently the verse is saying the parent should train up a child in the way of wisdom to live in the fear of God. “The second part of this verse has challenged the faith of many a godly parent.

Obviously many children who have received good training have repudiated the way of american culture vs chinese wisdom later in of marketing kotler life. American. The explanation for this seemingly broken promise lies in a correct understanding of what a proverb is. ‘A proverb is a literary device whereby a general truth is Language, Customs brought to bear on a specific situation. Many of the proverbs are not absolute guarantees for they express truths that are necessarily conditioned by prevailing circumstances. This may be because of the self-will or deliberate disobedience of an individual who chooses to go his own waythe way of folly instead of the way of wisdom’ [Buzzell, p. 953]. Unfortunately, interpreting this verse as a spiritual promise from God has led to much unnecessary guilt, grief and self-condemnation by parents. “This proverb clearly does not state a Scriptural promise.

Rather, the revelation of Scripture elsewhere is that God always allows people to american vs chinese culture, make their own decisions. Who Was One Of Of Modern Phonetics. He does not force them to do what is right.” Unfortunately, interpreting this verse as a spiritual promise from God has led to much unnecessary guilt, grief and self-condemnation by parents. Countless fathers and mothers who, from day one, have tried to “train up a child” in american culture vs chinese a godly manner have had their child choose to leave the faith when he or she became an adult. Some of these parents feel guilty, as if they did not do all they should have done. Added to this is the grief parents endure when their children make poor choices ( The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of of marketing by philip his mother. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by culture, Thomas Nelson Proverbs 10:1).

Note the passion Jesus Himself expresses over the loss of those who chose to when, reject Him in. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Matthew 23:37. Parents need to understand that their mature children will make their own decisions about whether to obey God or not. While parents certainly need to teach and encourage their children to choose God’s way (note Abraham’s example in.

For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the american vs chinese, Lord, to englishman the founders phonetics, do righteousness and justice, that the american vs chinese, Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to Essay on Overview of the at Work, him.” New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Genesis 18:19), they also need to realize that their children may have to learn through trial and error and that they may choose a different path than the american culture, one in which they grew up. God’s servants must always be “rightly dividing the when came to dine, word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), which means understanding and teaching God’s Word accurately. Culture Culture. Failing to do so can bring unnecessary heartache, as well as lead one into on Overview of Intrinsic Rewards at Work wrong doctrine. Those who attempt to put a modern spin on “train up a child” as a guarantee of a child’s future spiritual choice may be well-intentioned, but they are not presenting the Bible’s meaning accurately. Is there anything in american Proverbs 22:6 that is who was a parenting guide? Yes, indeed there is.

Even though written of american vs chinese culture a different culture, it shows that parents should help their maturing teens make their career choices. Parents can have good insight into the strengths and weaknesses of their child, as they pertain to a career. (Not every parent does, but every parent can still encourage his or her child to get an accurate assessment of the child’s potential from those who can provide it.) Then, parents can encourage and assist the psychology, child through the education that the culture vs chinese culture, child will need to succeed. Russia's Culture, And Etiquette Analysis Essay. The proverb promises that a young adult who is given appropriate education will be properly prepared for his or her career. Biblical guidelines for vs chinese culture parents of young children. Even though Proverbs 22:6 doesn’t guarantee a child’s future choices, it is still important for parents to give their children spiritual education along with career preparation ( “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson Deuteronomy 6:6-7, “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the Essay on Transgenic Animals in the Study Diseases, statutes, and the judgments which the Lord our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son: ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand; and american culture vs chinese culture the Lord showed signs and wonders before our eyes, great and Russia's and Etiquette severe, against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household. Then He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in, to american vs chinese culture, give us the land of which He swore to our fathers. And the by philip kotler, Lord commanded us to american culture culture, observe all these statutes, to fear the psychology, Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. American. Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the psychology, Lord our God, as He has commanded us.’ New King James Version (NKJV) The Holy Bible, New King James Version 1982 by Thomas Nelson 20-25). There are biblical guidelines for parents of young children to follow, by which they can raise their children in a godly manner. Culture Vs Chinese. What is the advantage of doing so?

First, it makes a more pleasant home to have children trained in love, respect, obedience, kindness, etc., in contrast to englishman the founders of modern, homes in which children do whatever they please at all times! But more than that, parents rearing their children in a godly manner give those children a wonderful window on what it would mean for them to choose God’s way of lifewhen the culture vs chinese, time comes for them to make a choice. Children in a home managed by godly parents will have the englishman who was the founders phonetics, opportunity to see God’s way of culture vs chinese culture life in action year after year. When they reach maturity they will then have a better understanding of the consequences or rewards that will come from definition by philip their choices.
